TMJ treatment

The Most Complex Joint in the Body

What TMJ means

TMJ stands for temporo-mandibular joint — the joint that connects the lower and upper jaw. It’s one of the most complex joints in the entire body, capable of forward and backward movement, rotation, and side-to-side motion. “TMJ” often refers to complications and problems with this joint, and they’re more common than most people realize.

Common symptoms

  • Pain in the jaw, face, or around the ear
  • Limited movement of the lower jaw
  • Clicking or popping sounds
  • Muscle spasms
  • Locking of the jaw

Causes & treatment

Potential causes include genetics, hormones, low-level infections, auto-immune conditions, trauma, and clenching or grinding of the teeth. Diagnosis and evaluation are performed by dentists experienced in TMJ problems, and common treatments include night guards, bite guards, and bite adjustments — your dentist will guide you toward the treatment that fits your situation.

If you experience any TMJ symptoms, please let us know. Dr. Mangat will be happy to evaluate your situation and recommend the best treatment possible — and if grinding is wearing your teeth down too, a custom nightguard protects them at the same time.
