The 7 most common emergencies — and what to do
If an adult (permanent) tooth is knocked out, we may be able to put it back — a tooth replaced within 20 minutes has a fair chance of survival, while a delay of more than 2 hours makes survival unlikely. Handle the tooth carefully and never hold it by the root. If it’s dirty, gently rinse with water — do not scrub or remove attached tissue fragments. Try gently placing it back in the socket, or store it in a cup of milk, and call us immediately. Time is critical.
The most common dental emergency — from biting something hard or an accidental knock. The good news: it’s usually easy to fix with bonding, a porcelain veneer, or a crown depending on the damage. It may or may not need a root canal — call us for an evaluation.
Usually more severe than a chip — teeth can break from hidden cracks or decay, and it can be very painful. If there’s swelling, place a cold compress on your cheek and rinse with warm salt water, then call us for a same-day visit.
Try gently flossing it out. Do not poke the area with pins or anything sharp — that can damage tooth structure or gums. If gums swell, an anti-inflammatory (if you’re able to take one) and frequent warm salt-water rinses help until we can see you.
Even without pain, the remaining tooth is weakened and prone to further damage — book promptly, because if a crown is off for a while the neighbouring teeth shift and it may no longer fit. Meanwhile: clove oil dabbed on a Q-tip numbs a sensitive exposed area; a piece of sugar-free gum can cover a broken filling; a clean crown can sometimes be re-seated temporarily with denture adhesive. Don’t chew on that side.
These can bleed heavily. Apply pressure with a clean cloth; place an ice pack on a swollen lip. If bleeding won’t stop, go to the nearest emergency room as soon as possible.
An abscess is an infection around the root of a tooth or between teeth and gums — a serious condition that needs prompt treatment, as it can damage teeth, gums, and bone, and can spread. Call us as soon as possible; in the meantime rinse frequently with warm salt water (½ teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water) to encourage draining and relieve pain.
