Choosing the right mouthwash
Mouthwash is an integral part of a daily oral-health regimen. Most people reach for it for fresh breath, but it also helps maintain a clean mouth and healthy gums — research shows that mouthwash alongside brushing and flossing is more effective than brushing and flossing alone.
Drugstore shelves carry many kinds, with and without alcohol. If a mouthwash causes burning, or you have a dry mouth, stick to alcohol-free options. And children under six should not use mouthwash — they can swallow it.
The main types
- Anti-plaque: antiseptic formulas that fight germs and plaque build-up on teeth and gums, and freshen breath (e.g. Listerine Classic, Listerine Zero)
- Anti-cavity: fluoride formulas that fight tooth decay and strengthen enamel (e.g. Listerine UltraClean Anti-Cavity, Crest Pro-Health For Me)
- Combination: fights bad breath, cavities, and plaque in one (e.g. Crest Pro-Health Complete, Listerine Total Care Zero)
- Prescription: for gingivitis or periodontitis, prescribed alongside a thorough cleaning; limited-time use only, as prolonged use can stain teeth (e.g. Peridex, which contains chlorhexidine)
- Natural: alcohol-free formulas flavoured with essential oils — note that not all can eliminate plaque (e.g. Tom’s of Maine)
- For bad breath: most mouthwashes kill odour-causing bacteria, but some are designed specifically for halitosis (e.g. Oxyfresh)
